Prof. Hans Ludwig, MD, FRCOG FACOG (hon.) born 1929 in Czechia, resident in Basel (Switzerland) has started his professional carreer in Munich, being elected Chairman of the Departments of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Essen (Germany) until 1982 and Basel (Switzerland) until 1990. His fields of scientific interest have been blood coagulation and shock in obstetrics, contraception, human fertilization, and in particular morphology of the female genital tract (Scanning Electron Microscopy). Following his active years as chairman he is finally devoted to history of gynecology and obstetrics. He is member of the Editorial Board of "Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics" since 1980, Coordinating Editor since 1997. He was President of the German Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (1986 -1988) and President of the European Association of Gynecology and Obstetrics (1988 -1991), as well as member of the FIGO Executive Board (1979 -1994). Elected Fellow ad eundem Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (1987); elected Honorary Member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (1987), Honorary Member of the Czech Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics [Purkyne] (2000).
